Set into the sandstone cliff on which Nottingham Castle was built, Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem in Nottingham is one of several pubs in England which claim to be the oldest. Some claims date that it was established in 1189.
Regardless of the deabte over the age of this fine establishment, its other claim is that it is very haunted, and some would attest to that fact.
It is said to be haunted by the pleas of Isabella, the mother of Edward III. Isabella was the lover of Roger Mortimer, who had killed Edward II, and clearly the new King was not going to forgive the death of his father.
Mortimer was captured in the castle, taken to the Tower of London and then executed at Tyburn. Isabella's pleas for mercy fell on deaf ears, but it is those pleas that are said to be heard at the inn.
